"On the surface, it's a memoir: The story of my going deaf and getting
my hearing back by having a computer implanted in my skull. At various
points throughout the narrative, I explore the science and technology
of cochlear implants and compare the science-fiction concept of cyborg,
a human-machine fusion, to the reality of my life. I basically say,
'Here is what science fiction thought it would be like to become a
cyborg. Now let me tell you want it's actually like.'" - Michael

"Rebuilt" Author Visits Austin's Book People on Thursday, June 9

Michael Chorost Will Discuss His Transition to Part Human, Part Cyborg
As Part of the SXSW Interactive Festival Tech Book Tour

May 23, 2005, Austin, TX -- Michael Chorost, author of "Rebuilt: How
Becoming Part Computer Made Me More Human," will make a special
appearance at Book People in Austin on Thursday, June 9 at 7:00 pm.
Chorost's appearance is part of the monthly SXSW Tech Book Tour:
Interact with Authors.

"Rebuilt" chronicles the author's transition to partial cyborg after he
received an implant to restore his hearing -- thereby exploring the
subtle distinctions (or lack thereof) between technology and humanity.

Chorost explains that his book provides an in-depth explanation of how
new innovations are reshaping our lives: "On the surface, it's a
memoir: The story of my going deaf and getting my hearing back by
having a computer implanted in my skull. At various points throughout
the narrative, I explore the science and technology of cochlear
implants and compare the science-fiction concept of cyborg, a
human-machine fusion, to the reality of my life. I basically say, 'Here
is what science fiction thought it would be like to become a cyborg.
Now let me tell you want it's actually like.'"
